Asylum: A right

Imagine your country were at war.

Imagine you had a child who lost a limb in said war… you would want to get your child medical help, right? And you’d all want to be safe, true?
Now imagine the hospitals are being bombed and there’s limited medical care available and immense medical need.
Of course you’d rather get the medical care at home…. But when home isn’t safe and an international NGO offers you a visa and transport to get the medical care overseas, what do you do?
You get the care. You travel. You take care of your little one and your family.
Now you’re in the new country, mid treatment. You are here legally, visa and all.
Now…. The country housing you suddenly invalidates the visas of everyone from your homeland. You are not able to go back home, but you are now immediately breaking a law by being where you are.
The media will call you “illegal”.
You will be afraid of being detained, separated from your family, imprisoned, deported.
Does this make you a criminal?
Not to me. It makes the political system criminally corrupt.
