Peace Activism...

 Peace activism is not being wimpy.


It is doing the hard work of advocacy for people, all people.
It is doing the work before, during, and after the explosions and setbacks.
It is confronting wrongs rather than ignoring them, but doing so with an intent to heal and move forward, not to destroy.
It is stepping aside to breathe and breathing for others when they do not know how to. It is letting others breathe for you when you forget.
It is risking hurt in the name of long-term healing.
It is standing up and saying “No. This isn’t right” and going to find a better way. Sometimes it is sitting down and thinking the same thing, while nurturing and learning and planning ways to engineer a better situation.
Peace activism isn’t Defense and it isn’t War. It’s being there, informed, giving, healing, demanding, supporting, understanding humanity can be both beautiful and damaged.
It is doing our darnedest not to add to the harm in the world. It is knowing that’s an impossible goal, failing sometimes, then picking ourselves (and one another) up and trying again.
Peace activism is leadership. We need more of that.

I have always appreciated a good play on words, a playful rhyme, and a clever slogan.  When I first heard the phrase "Keep Calm and Carry On", it seemed much better than my younger sister's pleas to me to "Chill" or even "Chillax."  It doesn't surprise me that hundreds or even thousands of spoofs have been made on this British phrase from the 1940s.   Below, you will see simply the first page of Google images from today's search for "Keep calm and".  The possibilities are endless, even if the off-rhyme of "calm" and "on" gets lost in the variations.  By now, "Keep Calm and" has become a quintessential meme for the 21st century. Price Tags

 A ticker-tape parade costs about two million dollars.  What can you do with that much money? Let's see... This year, I struggled to help a little girl get glasses. Based on her prescription, she needed them. Based on her academic performance, she needed them. Based on her own statements, she needed them. But her family couldn't muster the $100 bucks for glasses.  There used to be easy ways for low-income families to get free glasses in NJ, but many of those grants were decreased this year. It took about four months for us to get her glasses. (Hurray to NYC which has a free glasses program!) With two million dollars, we could make sure 20,000 children had glasses. Every week, a group of friends and I make sure that some low income families have fresh, healthy food. I appreciate the foodbanks, but sometimes the nutritional value of canned food is all these families get. My friends and I have coordinated with local grocery stores to help these families. The Fourth...or Fifth...or Sixth Estate must save us

  They say the “Fourth Estate” or “Fourth Power” is the news and other media. It is different from the religion, politics and common people, but holds a power all its own. Think about the saying “The pen is mightier than the sword.” If used correctly, the media can stave off armies. "The pen is mighter than the sword"  at the Library of Congress Unfortunately, the heritage media has lately been a more divisive force in American society. It has become an extended arm of political parties and of the powerful elite. Rather than being a communication tool that boosters trust, some media sources have been chiseling away at foundations of our society. It’s interesting how this distrust falls a few decades after the fall of the fairness doctrine, which required equal air time to opposing points of view.
