They're All Our Children
I’m thinking about those children on the plane. Awakened in the middle of the night on a three-day weekend when most kids might be having back to school nightmares, these kiddos were snatched from a suddenly “safe” detention center and switched to ICE custody. Rather than awaiting a family member in the US to take care of them while their asylum requests are being processed, they suddenly were being processed for return to a place where, for many of them, gang violence and abuse were stealing their childhoods. A detention center under this administration was somehow the safer choice… until it wasn’t.
Thank you to the heroes in organizations like the AFSC and Amica and Young Center who were up all night filing papers and calling anyone who would hear them. Thank you to the judges who woke up and got moving at 2 or 3 in the morning on Labor Day. Thank you to a protective system that worked, for now.
All children are our children. We must keep looking out and speaking out.
